KATlanta Favorite: Toscano & Sons

Monday, June 1st, 2009

I mentioned I rarely cook. When I do find myself in the kitchen, I’m likely to partake in meal assembly rather than traditional cooking techniques. With limited space, time and patience, I am so fortunate Toscano & Sons is located right between work and home.

Toscano & Sons opened a few years ago, one of the first storefronts in what is now a developing commercial area called Brickworks in West Midtown. They carry a variety of Italian specialty items; olive oils, vinegars, pasta, canned goods, sauces, etc. There is a deli counter that offers cured meats to go or in delicious panini sandwiches on housemade ciabatta. You can grab everything you need for a killer cheese and charcuterie plate and I often find myself there if I need to bring something for a party.

On the reg I head there monday evenings to find dinner. Mondays are laundry days and I can normally get out of the first few treks with my boyfriend to the laundry room if I’m “cooking”.

My favorite Toscano & Sons meal to purchase and assemble is spaghetti and meatballs. I go with the Antica Italy Arrabbiata sauce. There are many sauce options, including those by local Atlanta pasta goddess, Elisa Gambino, but I love love this sauce and get it every time. The meatballs are made in New Jersey and frozen. I know frozen meatballs do not sound very compelling but I imagine these are made in someone’s home, double bagged in regular produce bags and labeled with a non-descript white computer label.

My last visit, I was very hungry and decided to order a panini to snack on while I prepped. The Toscano panino layers paper thin, spicy sopressata with creamy fontina cheese and wilted, peppery arugula. The selection of 6+ sandwiches are all under $5 and make a perfect first course!  (Please excuse the poor photo quality – I must have been shaking from hunger).

If you are in the Atlanta area, I encourage you to stop and enjoy Toscano and Sons!

Hello All! My name is Kat and I am pleased to share my thoughts and experiences eating in Atlanta and beyond. I worked in restaurants through high school in the Midwest, college in Boston, and have continued working in the hospitality industry in Atlanta. My greatest qualification is my appetite. I am far from a chef and rarely a cook but love eating, trying different kinds of foods and new restaurants. I hope to share some perspective on Atlanta’s dining scene, my favorite places, and at the very least entertain y’all!
