As I engaged in my weekly journey through the lower east village seeking sustenance I happened across the Cornerstone Cafe, right on the corner of 2nd st and Ave B, just north of Houston. I walked in with a mild sense of trepidation, as I have found some very unsavory places to lunch in this area, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Inside was a full dining room fashioned with 2 servers, an extreme departure from the frazzled lone server, host, busser, takeout and cashier one would usually find. The tables maximized on the space while still leaving enough space for comfort. The old school Motown music coming through the speakers transported me to a place of euphoria, as it subtly wafted to my ears. It is just far enough away from the street to have the hustle and bustle of the city not intruding on your meal. And I haven’t even gotten to the food!
With a selection that varied from Panini’s, to pastas, to burgers and fries, there is something there for even the most advanced or simplistic palates. I selected the turkey burger, as I have had a craving of one for days now. MMMMHHHHMMMM! It was perfect. The bread was fresh, as were the tomatoes and lettuce. The presentation was even advanced, who ever hear d or a restaurant not using proper cutlery. All their food is made to order in the open kitchen which allows the delicious scents to attack you as you wait.
All in all, it was a very pleasant experience. From entry to the check, which was one of the most reasonable I have seen in this area. Oh yes, Cornerstone Cafe, I will be back soon and next time I will bring friends!
