My sister recently had a root canal. This might not seem like the time that you would expect anything great to come out of our kitchen… but you’d be surprised, there are some terrific foods that you can enjoy with no chewing required.
The absolute highlight of my sister’s recovery has been smoothies! They are super easy to make and blending them up at home is considerably cheaper than picking one up at a smoothie shop. I’d like to share two of our favorite recipes with you:
Mango Madness! (because an overly enthusiastic name only adds to a smoothie’s charm)
-fresh mango (frozen works too)
-banana
-ice
-plain yogurt
-milk
Strawberry Soy Power Smoothie! (if you’re looking for a way to get some protein that doesn’t involve steak)
-Strawberries (fresh or frozen)
-frozen “mixed berries”
-ice
-silken tofu
-soymilk
I didn’t include quantities, because we tend to assemble our smoothies intuitively. If you like your smoothie super fruity, add more fruit. If you’re big into that tangy yogurt flavor, add more yogurt. Sweet tooth? Add a tablespoon or two of sugar…
The possible combination’s are endless. You can throw just about anything into a blender (set blender to stun and let it do it’s thing for a few minutes) and call it a smoothie. The minimum requirements are ice and some type of liquid (milk, juice, or water). Then just add any or all of the following: fresh or frozen fruit, yogurt (plain or flavored), honey, chocolate syrup, peanut butter, espresso shots (why not?), you can even add veggies (cucumber, peppers, yum). (I’d love to hear your favorite ingredients in the comments).
One last tip: If you’re having trouble blending (the blades are spinning, but nothing is moving) you need to add more liquid. A splash of milk, juice or water should do the trick. Enjoy!
